1. How do I get the most out out of the Home Page Job Search?

The quickest and easiest way to search for that perfect job is using the Job Search on the home page. Here’s a rundown on how to get the most out of this search:

Keyword
This box searches each vacancy on the site for the word you’ve entered. The results of your search will be a list of all vacancies containing this word.

Try entering job titles, locations, qualifications and skills which you would expect to find in your ideal job. You can also enter the ID number of a specific vacancy which you’ve seen advertised in the media, at one of our branches, or on this website previously.

Enter more than one word if you wish and likewise your search results will list all vacancies containing both of these words but not necessarily next to each other in the vacancy. For example, a search for marketing assistant will return vacancies containing the term marketing assistant, but also for a HR assistant in a marketing consultancy.

Want to search for two or more words appearing together in a vacancy? You should enter the words in speech marks. So, a search for “marketing assistant” will return vacancies containing these words together and not a HR assistant in a marketing consultancy.

Want to search for vacancies containing either one word or another? You should enter a comma between the words. For example, a search for marketing, assistant will return vacancies containing either or both of these words.

Location
This box searches the location section of each vacancy for the place you’ve listed and the results of your search will only show vacancies in the location you’ve chosen.

If you enter the name of a county then this will show all the vacancies in this county, including all vacancies in places within that county, to ensure that you don’t miss out on any job opportunities.

You can also enter the initial part of a postcode and the search results will display all jobs within that postcode area. For example, searching on ‘B’ will return all vacancies within the Birmingham postcode area. It should be remembered that postcode areas in some parts of the country can cover significantly larger areas than the city or town after which it is named.

Proximity
This box allows you to search the area around the location you’ve entered. For example, if you select 10km in this box, the search results will show all vacancies within 10 km of the place you have entered in the Location box. This is useful when you want to widen your search slightly and if you don’t have a good geographical knowledge of the area.

2. How do I get the most out of an Advanced Search?

Did the home page Job Search return too many vacancies? If it did, then try using the Advanced Search for a more specific search.

You don’t have to use every field available but the more you use, the fewer jobs you will find.

Industry Sector
All vacancies are allocated an industry sector to which they belong. A search on industry sector will limit the results to vacancies in your chosen industry sectors only and therefore provide you with vacancies that better match your requirements. The more industry sectors you select; the more vacancies that will appear in your search results. You can choose any number of industry sectors.

Simply select an industry sector from the list on the left and click on the “arrow pointing right button” to add that industry sector to your search. If you change your mind about an industry sector you’ve already selected then select that sector from the list on the right and click on the “left pointing arrow button” to remove it from your selection.

Job Title
This box searches the job title of the vacancy and is more useful than a simple keyword search if the words you’re searching for are likely to be found elsewhere in the vacancy. For example, searching for director in a keyword search shows you all vacancies containing that word, including job positions which involve reporting to a director. Entering director in the job title box will only show jobs which include director within the job title.

A search on job title finds all vacancies containing those words, so remember that if you are looking for a specific job title you should enter the words in speech marks. For example, if searching for a managing director position you should enter “managing director” to avoid search results containing vacancies for other directors, such as finance directors or marketing directors.

Remember that some job titles have recognised abbreviations, such as MD for managing director. To search for both the abbreviated and full job titles, separate them with a comma. For example, “managing director”, MD.

The more specific you are about a job title, the fewer vacancies you will see in your search results.

Skills
This box searches the description part of each vacancy. It’s particularly useful if you have specific skills or qualifications that are vital to the role you are seeking. It’s also useful where the role you are seeking is known by various different job titles and where the skill levels rather than the job title are more important.

Contract Type
Use this box if you’re only interested in either permanent work or temporary/contract work. Unless you have a strong view on this, we would advise you to keep your options open and select “either”.

Advert ID
Use this box to enter the ID number of a specific vacancy which you have seen advertised in the media, at one of our branches, or on this website previously. This enables you to find the desired vacancy quickly and easily.

3. How do you arrange the Search Results?

When you do a Job Search, either on the home page or from the Advanced Search page, the results are returned to you first in order of relevance, and where two jobs have the same level of relevance they are then sorted by the date the job advert was posted on the site.

The search results are listed in ‘detailed’ view to provide you with all the information you are likely to need to decide whether a job is relevant. If you would prefer to see each vacancy listed in summary view then just click on the ‘summary’ link found at the top of the search results. This will then hide the extract of the job description.

9. How can I change or delete Job Agents?

You may find that a Job Agent which you set up initially is not as useful to you as it once was. We recommend changing a Job Agent if

  • It is not finding the right type of jobs
  • Not finding enough jobs where you have been very specific with your criteria

To change the criteria follow these steps:

  • Under the Job Watchers section click on Edit next to the Job Watcher you wish to amend
  • Change the details in the relevant boxes
  • Click on the Save button

  • Under the Job Watcher section click on Delete next to the Job Watcher you wish to remove.

10. Why am I not receiving my Job Agent emails?

There are a few reasons why you may not be receiving any Job Watcher emails. If you consider each of the following suggestions, in order, you should be able to rectify the problem easily and will soon be receiving your Job Watcher emails:

Send Frequency
When you set up your Job Watcher you chose to receive them daily, weekly or not at all. We automatically send them daily unless you specifically chose otherwise. If you selected weekly or not to send them at all, this may be why you are not receiving your Job Watcher. To check the frequency of each Job Watcheryou have set you should:

  • Login to your My Manpower
  • Under the Job watcher section, click on 'Edit' next to the specific Job Watcher
  • Check whether you have asked us not to send you that job agent by email.
  • Check under the Send option whether you’ve selected daily or weekly and change if necessary
  • If you change the frequency, click on the Save button to store your new settings
  • You will begin to receive your Job Watchers at the new frequency starting the following night

Job Agent Criteria
We only send you a Job Watcher email if we find vacancies that match your criteria. If your criteria are very specific then there may not be any matching vacancies for us to send to you. To check if this might be the issue, try logging in to your My Manpower and running the Job Watcher search to see if it finds any matching vacancies. To do this:

  • Login to your My Manpower
  • Under Job Watchers, click 'Edit' next to the specific Job Watcher
  • Click 'Run Job Watcher'
  • If a Job Watcher is finding no matching or similar jobs then you may wish to consider changing your criteria
  • To widen your criteria you can fill in less of the fields (for instance only search for jobs with “Sales Manager” in the job title, rather than with “Sales Manager” in the job title and “field sales” in the Skills field), or put broader information in individual fields (For instance search for jobs within a county, rather than a specific town.).
  • If you change your criteria, click on the Save button to store your new criteria
  • You will begin to receive your Job Watcher with any new criteria starting the following night

Email Providers’ SPAM filters
Owing to the growth in unsolicited emails (SPAM) during the last decade, many email providers have built filters into their email programmes to stop you receiving as much SPAM in your inbox. Unfortunately, many of these filters wrongly classify Manpower’s Job Agent emails as SPAM and this is the most likely reason why you are not receiving your Job Watcher emails.

To overcome this problem, you will need to add Job watcher’s email address to your address book (most providers) or safe senders list (if using Microsoft Outlook). Job Watcher’s email address is jobagent@manpower.co.uk.

White Lists
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have a ‘white list’. Email from any sender on the ‘white list’ will be always be delivered to your inbox. Try contacting your ISP and ask them to add manpower.co.uk to their ‘white list’. This is only relevant to you if your email is delivered from a mail server to a programme on your PC (such as Microsoft Outlook) and not if you use a browser based email programme (such as Yahoo, Hotmail etc.)

Some personal SPAM filtering software, such as EmailProtect, SpamEater Pro and Qurb also have white lists. If you are using this type of software on your PC, try adding manpower.co.uk to its ‘white list’.

If you’re still not receiving your Job Watcher emails having followed all the steps above, please contact us.

11. Why can't I read my Job Agent email?

Occasionally some users have difficulty reading Job Watcher emails if they’re sent in Graphical (HTML) format rather than simple text format. If this is the case, you can probably read the text but you just can’t see the graphics. There are 3 reasons for this which can be easily fixed:

  • Some email programmes remove graphics from emails where the sender is not listed in the address book of the programme, so try adding jobagent@manpower.co.uk to your address book
  • Some email programmes automatically remove graphics from emails. If you’ve never seen graphics on any emails you’ve received then you are probably using such an email programme. The graphics can usually be made visible by clicking a button at the top of the email. Try looking in the Help index of the email programme for the pages on HTML emails if you need help locating the button
  • A very small proportion of email programmes (usually those that are at least 5 years old) do not support HTML emails at all. You can usually ascertain this if the text is also unreadable or contains unusual symbols. If this is the case then you should opt for text emails instead of HTML.

How to change to text emails:

  • Login to your My Manpower
  • Under Job Watchers and click on 'Edit' next to the specific Job Watcher
  • Tick the 'Text' box under 'E-mail format'
  • Click the Save button to save your new settings
  • You will receive your email in text format starting the following night
  • Don’t forget to repeat this process for each Job Watcher you have set up

Have we solved the problem?
If you’re still not receiving your Job Watcher emails in a readable format having followed all the steps above, please contact us.

13. Why can't I register with Manpower?

[Note that there should be an explanation for candidates who have been filtered out of the registration process by the legal questions posed during the initial registration. This will be country specific. It should include detailed positive instructions of what these filtered out candidates might want to do instead of using Manpower. An example is provided below for EU work permits in the UK.]

How can I obtain an EU work permit?
EU law states that any person who is not a citizen of a country within the EU must obtain a work permit to work in any country within the EU.

An application for an EU work permit can be made by yourself, using an agent or through an employer who wishes to employ you.

We’re sorry, but Manpower UK doesn’t arrange applications or provide advice on obtaining EU work permits. We can help though by pointing you in the right direction.

The Home Office is the arm of the UK Government responsible for EU work permits in the UK. The process is managed by the Work Permits (UK) division of the Home Office’s Immigration and Nationality Directorate. More information can be found on their website: www.workingintheuk.gov.uk

There are many agencies which claim to help non EU citizens obtain an EU work permit. A search in any major search engine will reveal websites for such agencies. Manpower UK does not endorse or recommend any such specific agencies.

14. How do I edit my CV?

Updating your CV is as simple. First, you must make any changes to your CV on your PC. We recommend you give your CV a version number just so that you don’t get the updated CV confused with the original CV. Once you have your updated CV then just follow these simple steps:

  • Login to your My Manpower using your email address and password
  • Click on Replace in the Word CV section
  • Click on the Browse button
  • Find your CV in Word format on your PC or disk
  • Select your CV and click on the Open button

Your updated CV is now saved. Remember though that our systems will virus check your CV, so you won’t see it registered on your account for about 30 minutes after you’ve saved it.

As part of the registration process you may have provided us with details of work experience, education and references to enable our consultants to confidentially search for jobs on your behalf and discretely present you with suitable opportunities. Your Word CV is only used for you to make applications and our consultants will not be aware of these changes. You wouldn’t want to lose out on that perfect job because we weren’t aware the changes to your CV, so be sure to update the relevant sections of your registration details. To do this simply:

  • Scroll down your My Manpower page to the Active Job Search section
  • Click on Edit next to the relevant details section such as Work Experience or Skills
  • Enter and new details as necessary and click on the ? next to a box or question if you need any more detailed help

17. Why can't I login to My Manpower?

There are a number of reasons why you may be having difficulty logging in to your My Manpower account. We find that the following 3 suggestions below enable the vast majority of users to get their login to work successfully:

Case sensitive login
Remember that both the user name and the password are case sensitive. Check to see if the Caps Lock function on your PC is switched on. If so, turn it off and try logging in again.

Temporary Internet Files
These are files which your browser stores to enable it to work quickly and allow you at times to view browser pages whilst not connected to the internet. Sometimes these files can cause login problems and clearing these files from your PC may resolve this issue. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer as your browser you can clear your temporary internet files by taking the following steps:

  • Select Internet Options from the Tools menu
  • Under the Temporary Internet Files section click on the Delete Files button
  • Once this is complete (which may take up to 30 seconds if you have not done this recently) click on the Delete Cookies button
  • Once this is complete (which may also take up to 30 seconds) click on the Clear History button in the History section
  • Once this is complete (yes it may take up to 30 seconds!) click the OK button
  • Close down all browser windows that you have open
  • After a few seconds, reopen your browser and return to our site and try logging in as normal

If you are using a browser other than Microsoft Internet Explorer, the steps will be the same although the layout of the browsers menus etc may be slightly different but the essential steps are the same:

  • Delete all temporary internet files
  • Delete all cookies
  • Delete all history
  • Close all browser windows
  • Reopen your browser and try to login as normal to My Manpower

Try looking at the pages under the Help menu if you are unsure how to perform the essential steps.

19. What can't I see the help text when I click on the ? button?

If you cannot see the help text when you click on the ? button then this is probably because you have a pop-up blocker installed in your browser. Our help bubbles appear as pop-up windows for ease of use but unfortunately pop-up windows are abused by many sites and some browsers now have tools to block all pop-ups. You may well not be aware that you have a pop-up blocker as often they come as part of a toolbar you have installed.

The most common pop-up blockers are part of Google, MSN or Yahoo toolbars. You can identify the toolbar usually by the company’s logo appearing at the left side of the toolbar. • In the MSN toolbar, click on the down arrow button to the right of the wording saying Pop-ups Blocked
  • From the resulting drop-down menu select Allow Pop-ups for this Site
  • Click the OK button in the dialog box stating Pop-up windows will be allowed for the following site: http://www.manpower.co.uk
  • Close all browser windows and then return to the same page of the site

Yahoo Pop-up Blocker:

  • In the Yahoo toolbar, click on the button showing a browser window with a yellow shield in front of it
  • From the resulting drop-down menu select Always Allow Pop-Ups From…
